Earth Day with Kids: Simple Yoga & Mindfulness Ideas That Actually Feel Magical

Earth Day is one of my favourite themes to teach.
Not because it’s “another holiday”… but because kids just get it. They love the Earth. They’re curious about it. They notice things we rush past every day—like the sound of birds, the way trees move in the wind, or how the grass feels under their feet.
And when you slow things down just a little, you can turn that natural curiosity into something really meaningful.
At Little Yogis Academy®, we use Earth Day as a chance to help children feel connected—to their bodies, their breath, and the world around them.
🌎 Why Earth Day is such a powerful theme
You don’t need a big lesson plan to make this impactful.
Honestly, some of the best Earth Day classes I’ve taught were the simplest ones.
It’s just about creating space for kids to:
- notice nature
- move their bodies
- and feel calm and grounded
When kids feel connected to the Earth, they naturally start to care about it. You don’t have to force that part.
A simple Earth Day yoga class (that kids LOVE)

Here’s an easy flow you can use in a classroom, childcare, or even outside:
Start with a circle (a few minutes)
Sit together and ask:
“What do you love about the Earth?”
You’ll get the sweetest answers—animals, trees, flowers, sometimes even snacks 😂
Add a breathing exercise
I always keep this one simple:
Smell the flower 🌸
Blow the wind 🌬️
The kids instantly understand it, and it sets the tone for the whole class.
Turn it into a story
Instead of “doing poses,” I like to guide them through an experience:
“We’re tiny seeds… curled up in the ground…
The rain is falling…
The sun is warming us…
We’re growing… slowly… into strong trees…”
Then layer in movement:
- Seed pose
- Tree pose
- Flower pose
- Swaying like the wind
- Buzzing like bees
It becomes less about “getting it right” and more about imagination and movement.
🎵 Add a little play
One of my go-tos is a simple freeze dance.
Have them move like:
- animals
- trees
- raindrops
Then pause the music and call out:
“Show me how we take care of the Earth!”
They’ll act out picking up garbage, watering plants, hugging trees—it’s the cutest thing.
Wind it down with a short rest
Have them lie down and guide them through something soft and simple:
“Feel the ground under your body…
Imagine you’re lying in the grass…
The sun is warm…
Everything feels calm and safe…”
You can feel the whole room shift here.

Easy mindfulness activities for Earth Day
You don’t need anything fancy—just small moments of awareness.
🌿 Go on a slow nature walk
Encourage them to notice:
- something they can see
- something they can hear
- something they can feel
Even 5 minutes of this is powerful.
🍃 Practice gratitude
Ask:
“What do you want to say thank you to on Earth?”
It’s always simple… and always meaningful.
🌎 Talk about small ways to help
Keep it light and doable:
- turning off lights
- recycling
- being kind to animals
The goal isn’t pressure—it’s awareness.

What I love most about teaching Earth Day is that it doesn’t feel forced.
You’re not trying to “teach a lesson”… you’re creating an experience.
And those quiet little moments—breathing together, lying on the floor, pretending to grow into trees—those are the ones that stick.
That’s where the magic is.
From our Little Yogis to yours
At the end of the day, this is what we’re really doing:
Helping kids slow down
Helping them feel calm in their bodies
And reminding them they’re part of something bigger
And honestly… the world needs more of that 🌎✨
If you’re a teacher or parent and want more ready-to-use classes like this, we’ve created a full library inside Little Yogis Academy® with themed lesson plans, visuals, and resources you can use right away.
Because teaching mindfulness to kids shouldn’t feel overwhelming—it should feel simple, fun, and really, really meaningful 💛
